This project was commisioned by KunstUitleen Alkmaar, who organised a large outdoor sculpture exhibition to called Bedevaart (Pilgrimage). The occasion was that the Old Church of Alkmaar turned 500 years old.
I designed a chapel in the shape of a snail shell, the logarithmic spiral. Walking into the entrance you quickly become engulfed in darkness, the spiral shape working as a light trap. Once you find yourself in the center you see a large spinning and moving image in the ceiling.
A large 2meter wide wheel spins round at high speed. The wheel is illuminated by light flickering at high frequency. This frequency is above the flicker treshold, so you don’t perceive it, but it does interfere with the drawings on the wheel, creating complex moving animations and mandala like symmetric imagery.
